Staff Profile – René Bullinga

In doubt about who’s who at Protel, what we do and how we can help? Get to know us a little better through this on-going series introducing the people of Protel.

Meet René. Many of you probably already have, as most days he spends almost more time out of the office with you than in it, which is great.

René is one of our Auckland-based Audio Sales Engineers as well as being our Product Specialist for the sales and support of Lawo broadcast consoles/routers and Avid ICON post production systems. If there’s anything audio Protel could help with and you live north of Taupo, then you need to be talking with René. He loves making sales but even more than that, his greatest motivation comes from seeing the right equipment or solution placed into environments where it makes an improvement not only to the quality of what you’re creating but to how you’re working as well. Another reason his may be a familiar face, he’s been with us since 2002, previously having run his own business.

You just have to look at René to see he used to be a fast bowler when younger and remains a big sports fan now, always tuned into the latest cricket score or (recently) FIFA game. He is also an accomplished musician, with a history of playing in jazz and rock bands in Wellington. René’s guitar collection is constantly expanding as he says “I subscribe to the n+1 theory where n is never enough.” His home music studio features a small but tasty collection of boutique outboard plus of course Pro Tools recording, lots of plug-ins and Genelec DSP monitoring. The household Mac collection now outnumbers the occupants! Coffee of choice: Flat White, no sugar.

Waves Plug-ins make your Live easier

Avid’s VENUE family of live sound consoles have always had the industry-leading ability to run plug-ins and now, using Waves SoundGrid technology, this functionality is extended to Yamaha, Soundcraft and other digital consoles. Waves Live Division was created to serve the current and future needs of live sound engineers. Over the years, Waves has brought to market a number of products that have become indispensable components of the live sound signal chain, and with the Waves Live Division, their commitment to FOH, Monitor and Live Sound/Recording/Live Broadcast engineers is solidified. Why run plug-ins live…

  • Limitless Possibilities - Increase your creativity with a vast choice of studio-quality processors to meet your every need.
  • Save Money - Plugins are far more affordable than hardware, and you can run as many as your system can handle.
  • Save Space - Imagine hundreds of processors—on one USB key. Save rack space and cartage, with no downtime for repairs.
  • Save Time - Setup EQs, dynamics and effects offline at your convenience, then just power-up at the gig.
  • Simplify Your Setup - Minimise cabling, patch bays and wiring.
  • Total Freedom - With preset portability and total recall, now you can take your sound anywhere, from the studio to the stage and back again.

With Waves, live engineers now have access to the same award-winning plugins heard on hit records, major motion pictures, and popular video games the world over. From equalizers, channel strips and reverbs, to effects, compressors and limiters, artists are now able to take their exact studio settings to the live performance environment.

Rocknet - Audio snakes for digital consoles

RockNet 100 is a flexible, digital snake solution and a cost-effective way to enter the world of RockNet digital audio networks. RockNet 100 provides up to 80 high quality audio channels including remote controllable mic pres directly from most Yamaha digital consoles. With Riedel RockNet 100, simplicity and reliability meet flexibility and performance. No Ethernet, no IP, no fuss.

Who needs multi-cores?
Instead of a full flightcase to transport the multi-core(s), RockNet just needs a small CAT5 cable reel, for up to 80 channels. RockNet is based on a redundant ring architecture with road-proof Neutrik Ethercon cabling, which allows light, compact and redundant connection between FOH, stage and if wanted, a monitor mixer.

Who needs analogue splitters?
Save money, weight and effort by eliminating your analogue splitters. RockNet includes a unique Independent Gain feature, which allows several mixing consoles to operate with the same mic pre-amps without affecting each other. Multi-console setups have never been easier. RockNet is a real-time, low latency audio distribution network tailored to touring and installed sound applications. RockNet provides a universal solution to almost any imaginable audio distribution challenge and behaves very much like a traditional analogue active split system.
