Fly My Pretties - the recording

Liquid Saffire 56

Fly My Pretties is a live multimedia event and a firm New Zealand favourite starring a selection of our finest contemporary musicians, set to a stunning visual backdrop and filmed and recorded live! Since its inception, Fly My Pretties has grown to become a local legend of music that continues to reach people all over the world. 'Fly My Pretties - A Story' is a conceptual extension of the previous two Fly My Pretties via a narrative that connects music, illustration, animation, charity and a message of change into one audiovisual experience.

For the ten show sold-out nationwide tour, Protel supplied a Digidesign VENUE for the production as part of a state-of-the-art live recording package that included a six camera shoot and a 64-track Pro Tools|HD audio recorder. Fly My Pretties is not a studio band but a live event so recordings had to be of the highest quality and the best takes needed to be auditioned easily for quick turnaround after the tour was over.

Lee Prebble (pictured) of The Surgery commented, "VENUE allowed me to capture 56 separate mic sources directly into Pro Tools|HD. I had mic preamp gain control independent from the FOH mix and even ran VENUE compression plug-ins to put myself one step ahead before starting the mixes. Pro Tools and VENUE never missed a beat throughout multiple two hour performances in different cities and the Pro Tools Sessions I'd created at the gigs simply opened up back on my studio Pro Tools|HD, all ready to start mixing".

'Fly My Pretties - A Story' CD/DVD Deluxe Set is a Loop production and released on Monday 17th August. The making-of documentary and full live concert screens on C4 this weekend, check your TV Guide for details.

Audient and the art of Zen

Audient Zen

Zen is a thoroughly modern, yet classic analogue mixing console combining DAW I/O integration with moving fader automation, transport control and the sonically pure signal path you would expect from Audient.

The art of Zen brings Audient's high resolution mixing technology to the forefront of the modern studio environment with an intuitive blend of classic analogue audio and flexible DAW integration. At its heart Zen is a compact, classic analogue recording and mixing console. Dual inputs provide the mic/line input stage and the DAW return path, offering a flexible system for connecting to a DAW or stand-alone recorder. With individual DAW record outputs, mono and stereo buses, auxes, a sophisticated monitor section and an optional digital output interface, Zen allows simple audio connection to the rest of the production set-up.

Designed for today's studio environments and in a compact frame, Zen features 2 inputs per channel, DAW record output on each channel, L/R mix bus, 2 stereo buses, 2 mono buses, 4 auxiliaries and 2 cue sends, plus a stereo compressor.

Audient have drawn on David Dearden's wealth of experience and the evolution of his designs going back to the 1970s, combining the benefits of traditional discrete circuitry with the latest advances in audio design technology. From the unique topology of the multi-transistor mic preamp to Dearden's renowned bus compressor, this is a mixer that provides the ultimate in big console sound and features in a revolutionary, compact form highly optimised for today's typical DAW-based studios.

Zen - redefining the compact console. Mix with your ears, not with your eyes.
