Creative & Performing Arts Centre opens at Scots College

Wellington, New Zealand, October 2012.

ScotsCollege CPAC BuildingScots College have opened a new building focused on creative and performing arts, graphics, music and drama. Courses such as digital animation, robotics, film and television and sound recording/mixing are being offered there. Scots College has a proud history stretching back nearly 100 years of educating young men. Students at the College are provided with opportunities in many areas to develop their potential through academia, sport, culture, service and spirituality, allowing them to contribute as global citizens who think creatively, reason critically and communicate effectively.

Located in the eastern suburb of Miramar with neighbours including Weta Digital and Park Road Post Production, the school wished to align themselves with the film and sound industry. After consultation with Rob Paris of Protel and John Neill from Park Road Post Production, they were able to settle on a system design and equipment mix that not only provides an ultra-modern and creative learning environment for students but also offers a world-class studio complex for external clients to use.

Headmaster Graeme Yule is delighted with the new state of the art facility which provides wonderful opportunities to many areas within the school. “It is quite unique to be able to offer technical facilities of this standard within a school, and it is a wonderful link to our friends at Park Road Post Production and Weta without whom this project would not have been possible. Through this partnership we are hoping to be able to facilitate courses to the wider community.”

Gene-surround-300x193Housed within the Centre are five recording/performance spaces, three composing/edit suites and a Recording Studio with large Control Room. Avid’s System 5 Fusion Digital Console is the centrepiece of the surround control room with Genelec 8260A 3-way Smart Active Monitors (SAM) provided for reference listening. All recording and editing rooms are fitted-out with industry standard tools for the creation of audio or video media using Avid Pro Tools|HD, Media Composer and Sibelius and housed using Argosy studio furniture.

An area for the control of multi-camera video production is also housed within the Control Room. Sony’s PMW-350K high-definition cameras can be located in a number of areas within the building while being remote controlled, switched, recorded and live-streamed. Vinten studio pedestals and tripod kits make it easy to take these cameras out on location when not used in the studio environment.

Faders 400-300x163A Kv2 Audio house PA looks after live-sound duties in the 500 seat auditorium/hall with additional active and passive speakers (also Kv2 Audio), providing live sound reinforcement for drama areas and floor monitors for performers. An extensive microphone collection for live and recording purposes is dominated by various Rode models, complimented by other standards from Sennheiser, Shure, AKG and Violet Design.

studio-reflection 4003-300x216“It has been a true pleasure to work with the staff of Scots College on such a wonderful project. It’s been immensely satisfying to see such a facility grow from the ideas and intentions initially presented to us to become the stunning hi-tech creative environment it is today.” commented Rob Paris.

Project management, design and technology were handled by Rob Paris of Protel, consultancy by John Neill from Park Road Post Production and installation by Stuart Clark of Sound Services Group.
